چکیده

The utilization of biopolymers gained recent attention worldwide due to their effective role in producing eco-friendly and economical products. Mucilage from Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI, other succulent plants) has the capacity absorb huge amounts water, forming a viscous colloid with interesting rheological properties. It also had potential ability for use as food additives or technological We, therefore, aimed at extracting characterizing pure liquid mucilage cladodes OFI (Egyptian variety) using multidimensional approaches including HPLC-RID, FTIR, XRD, NMR, DSC, TGA assays. chemical composition, total polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonols, antioxidant by DPPH ABTS assays were measured. HPLC-RID analysis showed that mucilage’s sugars are composed glucose, xylose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, arabinose, galactose, fucose 0.375 mg/mL, which subsequently confirmed FTIR NMR results. specific signals these observed 13C 1H spectra fingerprint was obtained FTIR. XRD patterns high calcium content, glass transition temperature 85.9 °C. Meanwhile, phenolic flavonols about 7.96 mg GAE/g FW, 3.61 QE/g 1.47 respectively. around 26.15 22.5 µmol TE/g FW methods, can be concluded cladode promising properties would improve open new opportunities trends food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, industries. could economically profitable its low cost, availability, effectiveness many edible applications.

Development and characterization of edible films based on mucilage of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.).

Mucilage of Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) was extracted and characterized by its composition and molecular weight distribution. Mucilage film-forming dispersions were prepared under different pHs (3, 4, 5.6, 7, and 8) and calcium concentration (0% and 30% of CaCl(2), with respect to mucilage's weight), and their particle size determined. Mucilage films with and without calcium (MFCa and MF, respec...

Effect of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. Cladodes in the Wound-Healing Process

Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. cladodes contain a polysaccharide fraction that can retain water. The cladodes are used in Sicilian folk medicine as cicatrizant. We studied the healing activity of a base cream containing 15% lyophilized cladodes and of a commercial ointment on the wound produced on the backs of rats. The treatment was carried out for 3 and 5 days. After three days of treatment,...

Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes as feedstock for ethanol production by Kluyveromyces marxianus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The feasibility of ethanol production using an enzymatic hydrolysate of pretreated cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear cactus) as carbohydrate feedstock was investigated, including a comprehensive chemical analysis of the cladode biomass and the effects of limited aeration on the fermentation profiles and sugar utilization. The low xylose and negligible mannose content of the cladode...

Italian Opuntia ficus-indica Cladodes as Rich Source of Bioactive Compounds with Health-Promoting Properties

Natural by-products, especially phenolic compounds, are in great demand by the nutra-pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. An analytical study was performed to investigate, for the first time, the presence of antioxidant constituents and the corresponding in vitro antioxidant activity in the extract of cladodes from Ficodindia di San Cono (Opuntia ficus-indica) protected designation of orig...

Rheology and Aggregation of Cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) Mucilage in Solution

The mucilage obtained from cactus is commonly described as water-soluble pectin-like polysaccharide. Although few potential uses of this material have been described, it is not an industrial hydrocolloid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rheological behavior of the polysaccharide isolated from the cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica. The polymer had a weight average molecular mass (...
